Ribbon Communications, Perspectives18 - Photos and Quick Take

Am back now from the Ribbon Communications conference in Los Angeles, and definitely glad I went. For me, there were both good answers and new questions, and I'm going to explore those in a separate post that will run next week on the BCStrategies portal. For now, I'll just share a few high-level impressions, along with some photos to give you a feel for what was on tap there.

First is the changing of the guard, with Fritz Hobbs taking on the CEO role, and David Walsh taking on a more focused role as Founder of Kandy. Fritz Hobbs is unknown to pretty much everyone I spoke with, and clearly he's a finance guy, not a tech guy. He said very little on stage, so it's hard to tell how he's going run things, but it's safe to say he'll be focused on keeping shareholders and investors happy. David's entrepreneurial and visionary style seems likely to be applied to Kandy rather than the entire organization, so it's also hard to tell what his overall impact is going to be now.

Speaking of Kandy, that was clearly the focus of the conference, and we didn't hear much about the core products that drive revenues and get the attention of analyst houses that track market share and build forecasts. This was also the case at last year's conference, but with the newly-formed Ribbon being a public company, I was surprised about that. We heard even less about how Kandy is actually doing - lots of use cases, customer success stories and touting of CPaaS and UCaaS capabilities, but no metrics. David Walsh made it clear that it's too early for that so let's just move on.

I really liked the clear focus on how Kandy is a great way to leverage the cloud so service providers can be more competitive, not just against other carriers, but the disruptors like Amazon and Twilio. It's debateable how much of a threat those players really are, but they're definitely in the mix, and service providers really do need an innovation engine to bring new services to market, and that's exactly Kandy's MO. Sound like another platform provider serving the carrier market? I'll have more to say about that in my BCStrategies post. And with that, let's shift from text to images with a few photos from the event - and to follow further, check out the twitter feed, #RBBNP18.

5 Signs it's Time to Change Your Phone System - My Latest Webinar

Most webinars I do are recorded live, so it's important to know the date if you want to participate. This time around, I was involved doing an on-demand webinar, and like the podcasts I do with BCStrategies, there's no live audience. We record the session as if it was live, and make it available on demand soon after.

For the above-titled webinar, I was the featured presenter, and following my talk, I was joined by Randy Carter from Genesys for an interactive dialog about the topic. The webinar was hosted by Toolbox.com, and the registration page has now been posted to their site. To learn more about the topic and access the webinar, here's the link.

If you're interested in understanding how the role of voice is changing in the contact center, I think you'll find this worthwhile, as there's much more to consider than the state of your phone system. As always, your comments are welcome, and if there's another topic you'd like to see us tackle, I'd love to hear from you.

The New Voice - My Next Webinar

Time's short for this one, but am doing another webinar with Ziff Davis. It's next Tuesday, March 20 at 2pm ET. Just finishing up my presentation now, and as the title implies, it's about the "New Voice", a broad trend that is being driven by the cloud, and emerging AI capabilities. There's a lot to talk about - no pun intended - and if you follow my work, you'll have a good idea of what to expect. I hope you can join me, and all the details to register are here.

Quick Shout-Out for my March Newsletter

Visitors to my website will know that I produce a newsletter, available on a sign-up basis. I'm not asking much - just your interest to learn more about what I do, and your email address - and over time, am hoping that will drive more engagement with some of you.

Many followers sign up for alerts for my new blog posts via RSS, but I don't know who you are. If that's all you want, great, but to get my newsletter, you need to sign up. For now, the newsletter provides exclusive content, and aside from amplifying my recent thought leadership and industry activities, I'll increasingly be creating original content, along with citings from my 10+ year archive of blogs posts and photos.

That's my soft pitch to encourage you to sign up, and if you do that soon, I'll make sure you get the March edition. Sign-up forms can be found on any page of my website. Otherwise, I encourage your feedback and ideas for future topics. Also, for the right circumstances, I'm happy to consider forms of sponsorship and possibly guest posts. My newsletter is really your newsletter, so all input is welcome - thanks.

Thoughts on ITExpo - Where the Phones Are

That's the title of my latest analysis, wearing my BC Expert hat for BCStrategies. For this month's post, I've done a recap of last week's ITExpo in Fort Lauderdale. I posted about it here on my blog a few times leading up to the expo, and now it's time for my post-expo takeaways.

ITExpo is certainly a different vibe from next month's uber-event, Enterprise Connect, and I've been posting about that here as well. Not too many analysts make it to both events, so I'll be doing a similar recap about Enterprise Connect for BCStrategies later next month. Until then, here's my take on ITExpo, and if you were there, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Preview of my Speech Tech Tutorial at Enterprise Connect on No Jitter

Got a few messages to unpack in that headline, as preparations for Enterprise Connect 2018 kick into high gear.

1. This is my first time at Enterprise Connect, and I'll be one of the very first speakers, presenting a tutorial on speech technology at 8am, Monday, March 12.

2. I wrote a preview article about my tutorial - all the details are there - and it's running now on No Jitter. Would love it if you could attend my session!

3. This may be my first rodeo with EC, but I'm a regular contributor to No Jitter - here's my profile page if you want to see my other posts.

4. We're all in sales, and here's my modest pitch if you haven't made plans yet. Use this link to register by midnight, March 9, and you'll get $500 off the price.

5. I hope you like the preview article, and if you do, I'm pretty sure you'll like my tutorial. Don't be shy - be social - use #EC18 and @enterprisecon to share.

My Current Newsletter is Out - Signed Up Yet?

JUst a quick shout-out about my newsletter, which I finally got going in December. Some of you follow my blog on your own, and many track it via RSS. That's fine, but what I really want is for you to sign up for my newsletter, which I'm trying to make into a monthly thing.

That's easier said than done given all the hats I wear, but the February edition has now been sent to subscribers, and the feedback has been positive. If you don't know, it includes exclusive content that I don't post here on the blog. So, if you want "more JAA" in your life, just sign up to subscribe, and you'll soon get the current newsletter. It's real easy - there are forms in the margins and footers of my website, and it just takes a few seconds. What are you waiting for?

My Next Ziff Davis Webinar - 3 Collaboration Trends for 2018

Told you it was a busy month.  I've got two webinars coming up this month, and this one is with my mainstay, Ziff Davis. Being January, I've got another 2018 outlook theme, namely how three trends are now driving collaboration - chatbots/AI, messaging and the changing role of voice.

They're all connected, but each is having its own impact, and I'll be breaking that down, along with a review of the major consolidation moves from last year that are setting the table for 2018. Here's the registration page, and I'll do a couple more shout-outs to keep it on your radar.

JAA Subscriber Newsletter Launch

I've lost count tracking the time for getting this done, but it's finally launched. Many of you have signed up to get my JAA update newsletter, and the first one was sent moments ago via Mailchimp. Thank you all for subscribing, and many of you have been signed up for a long, long time.

Now that I've got this in place, you can look forward to regular updates, hopefully monthly, and things will definitely evolve as we go. I'll soon be adding a short podcast where I'll review current trends in tandem with a guest, and if you have ideas for topics, please let me know.

If you aren't a subscriber, I hope you sign up, and it's not hard to find a reg form here on my site to do so. Many of you follow my blog via RSS - nothing wrong with that, but I don't know who you are, and by subscribing, you'll get exclusive content that I won't be sharing on the blog. Your call!

For my subscribers, I hope you find the content interesting, and would love to hear your feedback, as well as any business challenges I could help you address.

Cisco's Acquisition of BroadSoft - Our Podcast Analysis

If you haven't had your fill of what this deal means for the collaboration/UCaaS space, this should be your next stop. Wearing my UC Expert hat with UCStrategies, I've already written my perspective on the Cisco/BroadSoft deal, as have several of my peers. That post continues trending well, btw, and I welcome your comments if you give it a read.

Building on that, our latest podcast had a strong turnout among both analysts and consultants, and you won't find a stronger mix anywhere of people who know this space well, and really understand what's happening. The podcast has been posted now to our portal, and I think you'll find it time well spent.

Why Did Cisco Buy BroadSoft? I Think Taher Behbehani Knows Why

It's been quite a week, starting with BroadSoft Connections in Phoenix, then MoNage in Boston. Been a big blur, but am back now, and along the way, I managed to write up my thoughts about the big news that dropped just ahead of the BroadSoft event about being acquired by Cisco.

I hope the title of my post piques your interest, and if you read my latest analysis for UCStrategies (now branded as BC Strategies), the answer will emerge, along with many other thoughts that I think help explain what's behind the move. The post is running now on the portal, and while there, I welcome you to read my other posts, along with those of my fellow BC Expert peers, many of whom were also at BroadSoft's event.

Reimagining Voice in the Age of AI

That's the title of my latest post as a UC Expert with UCStrategies. AI takes many forms, and in the collaboration space, voice is particularly interesting now that devices like Amazon Echo are becoming mainstream. Business applications are emerging now for these devices, and there's lots more to come.

To read more, here's the link to my post, and your comments are welcome, as would be any sharing. I should add that the BC Summit is about a month away, and if you're attending, I'll be speaking more about this topic there.

June Writing Roundup

Sure was a busy month, and capped off a roughly two-month run of continuous events I either attended or spoke at. Somehow, I got my regular fill of writing done, along with a podcast, a webinar, and the launch of one of my current white papers.

Finally had a chance to exhale, put this digest together for my June writing, and gear up again for what hopes to be a quieter month. Something tells me things won't stay quiet for long, so gotta get back to work now.

Next Webinar - IP Phones are Hot - Who Knew?

Another month, another webinar. My busy-ness continues, and I've got another Ziff Davis webinar coming up. The date is Tuesday, June 27, and based on the title above, the topic should be self-explanatory.

It's easy to say we're in a post-PBX world, and if you've moved on to other things, you might be surprised to see that innovation is alive and well with desk phones. That's what I'll be addressing during the webinar, and with interest already strong, thought I'd start getting the word out now from my end. For more detail and how to register, here's the link, and I hope you can join us.

New Kudo - Top 10 Telecom Experts to Follow

The anonymous nature of the Internet leads people to behave in unusual ways, but its vastness also means that we all get lost in the crowd. Everyone has an opinion, but that doesn't mean everyone else is interested, and it doesn't stop folks from sharing it online. So, it's really hard to know who knows about stuff, and that's where top 10 lists can be of value.

Everyone has an agenda, and we never really know what goes into these efforts, but it's always nice to be recognized. Yesterday, I was cited in one such list, from U.K.-based Telco Bytes. At least this site is industry-based, and by looking through the list, they've gone beyond their local market to include North American industry-watchers, so it's not just friends and family.

I'll take it, and it's great see fellow colleagues Ronald Gruia, Evan Kirstel and Gary Kim in there too. The others are new to me, but after checking them out, I can say I'm in good company, and you wouldn't go wrong following any/all of them. Here's the posting of their top 10 list, and if you like it, please share.

May Writing Roundup

If you follow me, you'll know the whole month has been non-stop, but aside from all the travel to conferences and speaking spots, I managed to keep a pretty full slate of writing going - mostly for clients, but also for my own blogging. April Writing Roundup

Well, this must be the longest I've ever gone without blogging - my last post was a month ago, doing my March writing roundup. Wow, time sure flies!

I had no business travel in April, but was away on vacation for 9 days, and had a more than full writing schedule, including writing two white papers, and prepping for several upcoming conferences and speaking spots. So, no blogging for April, but here's a digest of what I was writing about.

My Next Webinar - 2017 VoIP Opportunities

VoIP may be old hat for some, but it's still new for a lot of businesses, and there's a bigger picture to consider.  Technology is moving quickly, and as we see more from UCaaS, CPaaS, IoT, AI and the like, VoIP will become more than just cheap telephony.

That's the ground I'll be covering on my next Ziff Davis B2B webinar, and I've piqued your interest, I hope you can join me. The webinar is next Thursday, December 15 at 2pm ET, and all the details for registering are here.

Next Stop - Nextiva, Scottsdale, AZ

Just a quick update. Pretty steady travel schedule lately, and it seems for every event I go to, there's at least one I'm turning down or conflicts with another event. The former happened this week, and the latter is the case for next week. What I can tell you is that next week, I'll be in Scottsdale, AZ for Nextiva's event, NextCon 16. It's the first time they're doing an event with analysts, so definitely looking forward to it. If you're attending, I won't be hard to find.

September/October Writing Roundup

Been a very busy stretch lately, and for some reason, I missed my writing roundup for September. It's a while ago at this point, but there are still some posts you may find of interest if you didn't see them. If you follow me, you'll know most of my posts aren't super time-sensitive.

My focus is more on industry-based trends, and very little on breaking news. I just don't move that fast, and it's surprising how many requests I get from PR reps who think that's what I do. Enough about that - here are the highlights of my writing over the past two months, and I hope you find some things here that you like.

Making Sense of the Messaging Landscape, my blog, Oct. 31
